26th November, 1950,

I consider that the greatest hope which

the world has of attaining that tolerance on which

lasting prace must be based lies in a free and

unfettered education.

Such a type of education

we have here in Hong Kong and this Week is designed

to bring it more clearly to your attention.

1, myself, have the successful conduct of

education in this Colony very much at heart and my

visits to schools of all kinds have convinced me

of the solid foundation which is now being laid for

the future.

The activities of Education Week are a

cross-section of the work which is being done and

which is being brought before you by the enthusiasm

of organizers, teachers and children in an attractive

form. I look forward to seeing much of it and wish it

the success it deserves and hope that it may become

an annual event.
